Book-Bite #1, The Places We Buy Books

Loud Librarian Josh discusses bookstores and bookshops in the first ever Loud Librarian Book-Bite! Join Josh as he reminisces about Borders Books, and talks at length about Powell’s Books of Portland, Oregon, and why everyone should just live there (in Powell’s).

Josh also discusses the local bookshops of Corvallis, Oregon, and describes what makes each of them unique. The Book Bin, Browser’s Books, and Grass Roots Books and Music. Each shop is its own community hub of book lovers, and the proprietors give each store an individuality that makes them, together, a triumvirate force of literature in Corvallis.

A Hairy-Footed Hero

This week's Loud Librarian has Josh looking over his all-time favourite work of literature, J.R.R. Tolkien’s, “The Hobbit.” What makes it such a dear and timeless classic? Josh gets into talking about how the world of Middle Earth is far more complex than it may seem, while ferociously waving his nerd-flag, and tearing into Peter Jackson’s movie adaptation. *Spoilers* for those of you who haven’t read the book, or seen the movies.

Crushing on the Classics

Today on The Loud Librarian, Josh and knowledgeable guest, Abby Erickson, dig into defining classical literature, and why it may or may not be important. These two discuss in detail their experiences with reading classical literature, and how education played around that. Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Faulkner, Woolf, and more, Josh and Abby bring all of these under the knife to closely examine just why professor’s continue to toss them at their students, and how the students might feel about that.
